This round table discussion, presented at the 47th edition of the AEDEAN Conference, showcases the work of Elleke Boehmer (South African), Carmen Rodríguez (Chilean Canadian), Alice Walker (African American), Michelle Good (Indigenous Canadian) and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton (Indigenous Canadian). Through a variety of genres ranging from the novel, the short story, the essay or the picture book, these writers join the ongoing critical conversation about how to reconcile and heal divided societies. They shine a light on paths that constitute alternatives and complements to institutionalized official discourses, underlining the importance of personal acts of truth-telling, memories, the empathetic acknowledgement of victims and their suffering, or the potential of interpersonal relations to bridge entrenched social boundaries.
